Pack mentality has Woodland boys unbeaten in NVL

BY ROGER CLEAVELAND
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
BEACON FALLS — Heading into the final two weeks of the regular season, the pack mentality has served the Woodland boys cross country team well as the Hawks are undefeated so far.
“They are not dominating, but we have a pretty good pack of runners where one through six we are pretty solid,” Coach Jeff Lownds said. “It is not like they go into meets and go 1-2-3-4-5 against teams, but we have a good first boy in Matt Luxeder and a good second runner in Kyle Crowell, and the other 3-4 boys are in like the 18:30-18:50 range, and fortunately for us so far, that has been getting it done for us.”
Lownds said that Luxeder, the team’s senior captain, has been running in the mid- to low-17s at the 5K distance, and that Crowell, a talented junior, has been running right around 18 minutes with the potential to get stronger now after a slow start.
Behind those two, the team has been getting very solid performances out of seniors Tom Bucciferro, Vincent Costanzo and Wes Stein as well as junior Charles Schwarz and freshman Marty Swercewski.
“I’m really proud of our top seven guys,” Lownds said. “They approach each day pretty well. They come in and understand what our workouts are and what we are trying to do. Matthew has shown real good leadership as my captain. Right now I feel really good about our team. I don’t know what is going to happen, but I feel good.”
He said the Hawks (9-0) have a huge meet today against Watertown and Oxford in Oxford. Watertown is 8-1 and always in contention for the Naugatuck Valley League title.
“We hope we go in and do our job and come out of there 2-0,” Lownds said. “But Watertown is very well coached by Brian LaFontaine. They are very good. I know they lost a couple of guys from last year, but when I look at their times, they are comparable to us. If we go do what we are supposed to do, we should be all right. If we have a bad day, they are going to take advantage of that. It is a nice friendly rivalry. We respect each other.”
The Woodland boys have never won an NVL championship in cross country so that motivation could help them over the last few weeks heading into the Oct. 18 championship meet.
“We have won several in track, but we have never won an NVL title,” Lownds said. “We have had several All-NVL athletes and several All-Division athletes. We have had State Open guys and finished fourth in the state and fifth in the state, but we have never won the NVL. I don’t want to look too far ahead, but I do like this team and the way they have approached everything so far.”

Unbeaten Woodland girls rely on balanced attack

BY ROGER CLEAVELAND
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
BEACON FALLS — Woodland girls cross country coach Jeff Lownds couldn’t be happier with his undefeated team this season as the Hawks’ success has been driven by outstanding balance throughout the lineup.
Woodland is a team with great senior leadership and impressive young talent. Combine that with the fact that all the runners are competitive with each other in terms of times, and you are going to win a lot of meets and put yourself in contention for championships.
“We have been very lucky with our girls,” Lownds said. “We have six girls that generally finish within a minute to a minute 20 of each other from our first girl to our sixth girl. That is a really nice finish that has led to some great results so far. My seventh girl, Calisa Costanzo, is coming back after being hurt earlier in the year, too. So we put seven girls generally in the top 11-12 each race.”
He said that both Emma Slavin and Jaden Young have shown the potential to run 22-minute 5K races and that overall as a team the Hawks can place all of their top six runners within the 22:30 to 23:30 window.
“Our top girls are sophomores and freshmen really,” Lownds said. “Emma Slavin is a sophomore and Jaden Young is a freshman. Brooke Iannone is a freshman and Jill Brotherton is a sophomore. Then we have two senior girls who have done a very nice job leading us. One is my captain for two years, Emilie Noreika, and the other is Jessica Fox.”
He said Noreika and Fox have done a great job earning the respect of their teammates and setting the tone for the entire team. Because of their leadership, he isn’t worried that the youth of the team will show come championship time.
“They have performed all year long, so there is no reason to think that they won’t going forward,” Lownds said. “They are pretty knowledgeable. They all know where they need to be on the course. They all wear a watch and get their splits. I haven’t thought of our youth as being an issue. Emma Slavin and Jill Brotherton were freshmen last year, and they performed very well. There is no reason to think Jaden and Brooke can’t perform well, too. They are quality athletes, and they have stepped in right away. They may be freshmen in name but in stature they are our top girls.”
He said the team will get a tremendous challenge today from Watertown in their meet at Oxford. The Indians (8-1) and the Hawks (9-0) are chasing defending Naugatuck Valley League and Class S champion Derby (8-0) heading into the Oct. 18 NVL Championship meet.
The Hawks have won four NVL titles, in 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2014, and while Watertown and Derby present significant challenges, Lownds believes his team could win another one if everything falls into place for them.

Watertown’s Ottowitz takes aim at NVL title

BY KEVIN ROBERTS
REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN
WATERTOWN — When the Naugatuck Valley League girls cross country competitors take to the course at Veterans Park for the championship meet Wednesday, they will be going after someone quite familiar with the course.
Watertown senior Bethany Ottowitz has finished first in each league meet so far this season, and she will be the favorite again.
“She’s having a great season,” Indians head coach Brian Lafontaine said. “She’s been posting good times all year.”
Ottowitz is healthy, running well and focused after some strong work in the offseason. It’s not just running ability that sets Ottowitz apart.
“She’s been great for us,” Lafontaine said. “Both her performance and her leadership have been tremendous.”
Ottowitz leads by example through hard work.
“She’s good with the team, she includes everybody,” Lafontaine said.
Individually, Ottowitz finished fourth in the 2016 NVL meet, and she will be taking aim at the top spot this time around. The NVL championship meet is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
Lafontaine wants Ottowitz to win the NVL title. After that, the focus will be on the Class MM meet and the State Open.
“I want her to stay healthy and take this to the big meets,” Lafontaine said.

WATERBURY — Kennedy senior Kyle Hotchkiss made his final Waterbury City Championship meet a memorable one.
Hotchkiss put a stamp on a boys race he has won for three straight years with a Montoe Park course record time of 16:15.7. On top of that, the Eagles captured the team title with a score of 32, well ahead of second place Holy Cross at 65 and third place Crosby at 75.
After Hotchkiss came Ethan Puc of Chase, followed by Kennedy sophomore Alex Brites in third. Hotchkiss, Puc (16:41) and Brites (16:54) all ran the 3.1-mile course in less than 17 minutes.
The Eagles also saw Ivan Meraz (sixth), Andry Evangelista (seventh) and Sergio Guevara (15th) crack the Top 15. The Top 15 in both the boys and girls races are All-City.
Holy Cross’ top runner was Jack Paulin, who finished in eighth place. Crosby’s Elijah Lewis took fifth place behind Wilby’s Bryan Oliveira, who was fourth.
Sacred Heart’s Jenna French won the girls race in 21:48.3. Holy Cross rode four Top 15 finishes to a score of 43 and a team title. Julia Mecca took second place behind French, and she was followed by Crusader teammate Galvin Brayton. Aizlyn Zupkus (12th) and Alyssa Sorraco (15th) also made it into the Top 15.
Waterbury Career Academy was second with 56 while Kennedy was third with 70. The top Spartan was Hennessey Vasquez, who placed fifth. Teammate Salma Gudaf was right behind her in sixth place. The top Kennedy runner was Silvia Pomaquiza, who took seventh.

Hard-working Hotchkiss has Kennedy running strong

WATERBURY — Kennedy senior Kyle Hotchkiss is driven toward success, not just for him, but also his team.
Both Hotchkiss and the Eagles have stood out this season. Hotchkiss has been winning races, and Kennedy has posted a 13-1 record.
“My season has been so successful because of learning from previous setbacks, my mom looking down on me from above, from a great and supportive team, coach, and school, and from my ambitions towards success,” said Hotchkiss, who won his third straight city championship Friday. “As a team, we are one.”
That quote shows not only the competitor in Hotchkiss, but the terrific human being as well.
“He’s an exceptional runner, but he’s an even better person — so much so that this description of him doesn’t even do him justice,” head coach Katlyn Hagley said. “He is a natural leader and role model to so many of the kids on the team, both on and off the course. He treats everyone with kindness and respect.”
Hotchkiss has dealt with a lot in life. He lost his mother last year when she was 51. That’s a big event for anyone to deal with, let alone a teenager, yet he approaches his sport and life with a positive attitude.
“To say he is hard-working is an understatement — he works harder than anyone I know,” Hagley said. “He has a positive outlook on running and life in general. His motivation and determination is contagious — which is one of the reasons we have had such a successful season as a team.”
Hotchkiss expects the best of himself, and he challenges his teammates to do the same.
“Kennedy has been so good this season because of the bond the team members have with one another,” Hagley said. “They had high expectations and goals for themselves and each other, and they are seeing those goals through. They are a very hard-working, determined group of young boys.”
The Eagles take aim at the rest of the NVL on Wednesday in the championship meet at Veterans Park in Watertown at 2:30 p.m.
No matter what happens, Hotchkiss and Kennedy have made this season a memorable one.

The Kaynor Tech girls cross country team won its fourth straight league title Monday, edging Ellis Tech, 50-58, at the CTC Championships at Wickham Park.
The championship was the 13th for the Kaynor girls program since it started competing in conference meets in 1998.
Four Panthers earned all-conference honors.
Hannah Stoveken finished second, Melanie Sanchez was sixth, Brianna Pittman took eighth place while Yulissa Navarrete was 17th.
The fifth scoring Kaynor runner was Mystic Stephenson, who placed 28th out of 53 runners. Stephenson wound up 23rd for the team results because several schools didn’t field a full team.
Pittman is a senior while Stoveken and Sanchez are both juniors. Navarrete and Stephenson are only freshmen, so the future is bright for them.
