WATERTOWN — It is a great story. The story is getting old. Ask Nonnewaug and Housatonic about the Berkshire League girls cross country championships. Nonnewaug will give the first point of view. Housatonic will take the second line.
The two outstanding programs went at it again Thursday afternoon at Black Rock State, and the results were eerily similar to last year, which brought more than a few smiles to Nonnewaug and some draining disappointment to Housatonic.
For the third straight year, Nonnewaug claimed the title as the BL’s best with a 37-58 win over the Mountaineers, and they couldn’t help but be reminded of 2015. Once again, the Mountaineers came into the meet undefeated, having defeated Nonnewaug during the regular season.
Once again, the Chiefs were able to reverse the outcome.
“It was the same thing last year,” said Nonnewaug coach Arleigh Duff. “The first time we faced them this year, well, we have three freshmen and they were nervous and let (the Housatonic runners) go. And they finished very high. But I knew if my two freshmen could split up their top three, which they did, that I have a good wall (of runners).”
Nonnewaug freshman Helene Berger finished second and the Chiefs’ wall followed, with freshman Carly Andrew coming in fifth, sophomore Jacquelin Berger eighth, senior Greer Hanley 11th and freshman Madeleine Woodward 12th.
The best individual runner belonged to Housatonic. Mari Cullerton willed herself to a title with a five-second win over Berger with a time of 21:01 over the 3.1-mile course. However, there was little time immediately after the finish to enjoy the triumph.
Cullerton, exhausted, slumped to the ground shortly after crossing the line and stayed down for almost a half-hour in obvious discomfort. Her coach, Letitia Garcia-Tripp, and parents sat with her. Cullerton struggled with her legs and an upset stomach.
She was able to stand and move gingerly before the awards assembly.
“She gave it everything today and did it,” said an emotional Garcia-Tripp.
A year ago, the Mountaineers’ Emily Sullivan, who finished sixth Thursday, couldn’t run in the meet because of an injury and Maggie Sullivan (shattered pelvis) was injured during the race. All of which added to the emotion of this year’s ending.
“All of this is tied in with a lot of emotion for Maggie Sullivan and last year,” said Garcia-Tripp. “I couldn’t be prouder of this team. They are each other’s biggest fans and support one another like cheerleaders. They have heart, passion and care for one another. They are a cohesive unit, all seven.
“You teach kids about supporting one another. This is not about the record. It doesn’t matter. Did I want (the title) for the kids? Sure, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. I don’t care what the paper says about who won. They are all winners in my book.”
Duff also had special words for Sarah Woodward, also coming off an injury.
“She was All-State last year and then hurt her hamstring,” said Duff. “She fought through it the whole time. She was sixth in Class M last year. But she took over a team leader role and was still in the top 13.”
And then there were the freshmen, led by Helene Berger.
“It was my personal best, but this course is a slower course,” said Berger. “(Mari Cullerton) just ran fast at the end.”
Lewis Mills placed third with 92 points. Joining Mari Cullerton, Sullivan, the Berger sisters and Andrew for All-BL honors were Christina Gubetta of Northwestern (third), Hannah Curran of Litchfield (fourth), Eve Cullerton of Housatonic (seventh) and Allison Moore of Lewis Mills (ninth).

Some coaches might say, “I told you so,” if their team went unbeaten and won the league crown. But Cheshire High girls cross country coach Rob Schaefer didn’t quite expect the Rams’ season to unfold the way it has.
“I’m surprised by the season we’ve had,” Schaefer said. “We had a good year last year, but fell short due to injury. (Thursday), one of our top runners did not have her best race.”
Yet Cheshire still took first place over Guilford, 60-90, at the Southern Connecticut Conference championships Thursday afternoon at East Shore Park in New Haven. Mercy (109), Amity (127) and Daniel Hand (144) rounded out the top five.
“We knew going into the meet that the competition would be fierce. What we feared most was the unknown because we didn’t know much about Guilford, except that they always have a great team,” Schaefer said. “They really challenged us.”
Schaefer told his girls that Hamden and Guilford were the only two teams wearing green at the meet, so he wanted them to focus on green and try to run by them.
Amity’s Emily Crisculo finished first overall with a time of 19:10. Lauren Daddi of Cheshire came in third in 19:49 and Rachel Kaplan ran a time of 20:07 to place eighth. They both made the All-SCC first team for the 9-0 Rams.
“We have a great leader in Lauren Daddi; she’s one of the best runners in the state. She works as hard as anybody, has drive and skills, is a role model and doesn’t seek out any personal gain,” Schaefer said.
“Rachel finished 25th last year, missing out on All-SCC honors. I knew this year nothing was going to stop her.”
Cheshire’s Amanda Addesso placed 15th in 21:04; Emily Longmore, who suffered an ankle injury late last season, finished 17th in 21:07, while Emily Schwab (21:22) came in 21st. The three qualified for the All-SCC second team. Camille Lewis (21:49) and Maya Kreidwise (22:21) also ran well for the Rams.
In 2015, the Rams finished 7-1 and narrowly lost the conference meet to Amity. In 18 years of the SCC championship meet, the Cheshire girls have won four times. Their last title, however, was in 2011.
The Cheshire boys finished third overall, posting 100 points, behind champion Xavier (44) and runner-up Amity (52).
Andrew Thompson of Fairfield Prep was the individual winner, running a time of 15:36 to edge the runner-up, Cheshire sophomore Brendan Murray at 15:39.
Other notable Cheshire finishers included Quentin Arai (16:55), who took 12th; Jacob Lawlor (17:11) in 21st, and Henry Klarman (17:31) in 29th.
Shelton took fourth as a team with a score of 114, followed by Fairfield Prep (123) and Guilford (169).

NAUGATUCK — Normally, the best cross country runners can inspire their teammates to championships or better performances by dropping times as the season unfolds. It’s an indication they aren’t relying just on talent but hard work.

Toward that end, Naugatuck High seniors James Clark and Caleb Brito have been inspiring the Greyhounds two-fold in a big way. En route to dropping their times dramatically over the last year — we’re talking minutes, not seconds — they have also dropped about 110 pounds between them.

“So between them, they have lost, like, an entire eighth-grader, or something like that,” Naugatuck coach Bill Hanley joked.

Clark lost 50 pounds over the past few years, and Brito lost 60 in just more than a year’s time. During that dramatic weight-loss process, they gained an awful lot of respect from teammates and coaches while, in their own ways, helping the team win four straight Naugatuck Valley League championships.

“James has been on the team four years, and everyone has just been so impressed with how he has stuck with it and worked hard,” Hanley said. “He is in the shadows of other guys, but they are so inspired by him. He encourages them and they encourage him. There is a lot of respect for his improvement up and down the team.

“They feel the same things toward Caleb, but they just don’t know him as well, because he moved here last year.”

As a freshman, it took Clark more than 50 minutes to run a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race. Now he’s finishing races in less than half that time, a little more than 20 minutes.

“When he started, he was barely finishing a 5K, and now he is down almost to a 20-flat,” team co-captain Grady Beasley marveled. “Come on! You are starting that bad, and you still want to keep going? That’s great determination. It shows that if you have heart, you can do it.”

Clark takes that to heart.

“It is good I can become a source to motivate my teammates to become better,” Clark said. “I hope they all push themselves harder like I am pushing myself every day. I think we are all doing a really great job this season.”

Brito’s time drop hasn’t been quite as dramatic, but it’s impressive since it has come in just a year. He’s gone from running races in 30 minutes last season to finishing Wednesday’s NVL championship meet in a personal-best 23 minutes.

“A lot of times when I first started, I was walking until I found my real inspiration and motivation and had a reason to keep going,” Brito said. “Then I knew what to do. First I wanted to be part of a team, and when I started losing weight, that made it better. Now I just love to run.”

Brito’s weight went from 220 pounds at the end of last season to 160 now.

Clark’s self-discovery through running is similar. He wanted to hang out with the right crowd of people, and at the same time he felt he had to prove something.

“I weighed like 180 pounds as a freshman, and now I am down to about 130,” Clark said. “I did it so I could run better, because I wanted to be there for my team. I felt like if I didn’t lose this weight, then I was letting my team down.”

Neither Clark nor Brito runs fast enough to finish among the team’s top five and score in meets, but that doesn’t mean they don’t play an integral role in the Greyhounds’ success.

“They have been an inspiration to other guys on the team,” Hanley said. “They look at them and tell themselves, ‘If these guys are working this hard, then I have to work that hard, too.’ You could never script all of that for the two of them and our team.”

While they have been inspiring others, the sport certainly inspired them to live healthier lives.

“Sometimes I will break out a bag of chips or some ice cream for old time’s sake, but I just feel lethargic the whole day,” Clark said. “So eating right and running is the best way to get better at what I love to do.”

Clark struggled to run a single mile when he started. He now runs 5 to 7 a day. As proud as he is of that, he may be prouder of Brito’s progress.

He remembers watching Brito not even run the whole loop during practices. Instead, Brito would just run sprints back and forth as hard as he could across the main field at Hop Brook until he developed better stamina.

“He wants to push himself to the limit,” Clark said. “He is just booking it now, and it makes me really proud of him. I used to be there. He is doing better than I was, and I am like, ‘Wow!’ Just, ‘Wow!’”

The state cross country championships will run throughout the day Saturday on the 3.1-mile course at Wickham Park in Manchester. Class S will get things started at 9:15 a.m. with all eyes on defending champion Shepaug.
“We’re hoping to do the best we possibly can,” said Shepaug coach Tom Scarola. “There are a lot of great competitors, and we’re hoping to peak at the right time. We’ve had to work very hard this season, and the competition has been very tough.”
The Spartans are led by senior Sean Parker, this year’s Berkshire League champion. Parker, who won the BL meet last week with a time of 16:10, finished seventh at last year’s Class S championship.
“He’s running extremely well this year,” added Scarola. “We’re hoping that he will qualify for the State Open and do well. We’re also hoping to qualify as a team.”
Another contender for individual honors in Class S is Derby’s Ken Little, who won the Naugatuck Valley League title last week in 16:33.
Naugatuck hopes to be a contender in Class L, led by senior Grady Beasley, who finished in third place (16:43) in the NVL race this season and hopes to improve on his 10th-place finish in Class L last year.
“A top-five finish would be a really good day,” said Greyhounds coach Bill Hanley. “We need a good day from everyone. There’s no margin for error. Everyone has to have their best day.”
“(Grady) is working really hard. He’s doing all of the little things right, and I hope it goes his way on Saturday,” explained Hanley.
The Class L race will begin at 2:05. New Milford is the defending champion.
In Class M, BL team champion Northwestern will be led by senior Gavin Woodward, who finished in fourth place, last year, while Constitution State Conference champion Terrell Patterson, a senior, will lead Kaynor Tech’s squad.
The Class M race is set for 11:25 a.m. Ledyard is defending champ.
The final boys race of the afternoon will be in Class LL, set for 3:10 p.m., where Cheshire will look to earn a top spot. The Rams will be paced by junior Brendan Murray, who took second last week in the Southern Connecticut Conference in a time of 15:39. He was fifth at last year’s Class LL meet. Amity won the team title in 2015.
Class SS, where Haddam-Killingworth is defending champion, will run at 10:20 a.m., while Class MM is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Guilford won this race in 2015.

The girls cross country state championships will be held Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester, where area schools such as Pomperaug, Nonnewaug and Watertown — to name just a few — are eying big things.
The Class S race kicks off at 9:45 a.m. and Class LL concludes the day at 3:40 p.m.
Pomperaug won the South-West Conference last week and comes into Saturday’s Class L race at 2:35 p.m. as one of the favorites. E.O. Smith is the defending champion.
“I told the girls not to pay attention to rankings,” Pomperaug coach Mark Goodwin said. “We won the SWC and people think highly of us and that’s nice, but we have bigger sights.”
The Panthers boast a strong pack, with SWC runner-up Ivy Walker (19:45.53), third-place finisher Madison Villa, Nina Koobatian (fourth) and Kathleen Scheak (ninth).
“I’d love to win it,” said Goodwin. “One of our goals was to pursue the Class L title. We’ve set ourselves up for this chance.”
Berkshire League champion Nonnewaug and Naugatuck Valley League runner-up Watertown hope to be contenders in Class M, which runs at 11:55 a.m.
Tolland is the defending champion.
“All year we’ve preached about getting ready for the big meets. It started with NVLs; we did great. Now we have to build off that,” Watertown coach Brian Lafontaine said. “The girls look focused, and I think they’re ready to go.”
“Something I’ve always told my teams is to think higher,” Nonnewaug coach Arleigh Duff said. “When we get the schedule at the beginning of the year, we don’t circle dual meets, We circle BLs and state meets.”
The Chiefs are led by freshmen Helene Berger, second in the BL race in 21:06 and Carly Andrew (fifth, 21:27). They were hit hard early on in the season when senior Sarah Woodward, who placed sixth last year, went down with a hamstring injury and had to miss some time.
“Sarah was in good shape in the summer until a hamstring injury nagged her, causing her to rest for a while,” said Duff. “The team was still able to step up and win. This is a neat team, the (finishing) order can switch around, which shows how good we are.”
Junior Bethany Ottowitz and senior captain Sophia Guerrera head Watertown’s group. Ottowitz placed fourth in the NVLs in 20:41.9 and Guerrera was 10th at 21:36.6.
“Bethany could be an All-State runner. She’ll get to the State Open with a top-12 finish,” said Lafontaine. “Sophia has been our team leader, coming down on times all year. If we could pack the next four runners in with good times, it will shoot us up the board point-wise.”
In Class S, NVL champ Derby and BL runner-up Housatonic are among the top teams. Immaculate won the title in 2015.
Haddam-Killingworth will defend its title in Class SS, which takes off at 10:50; Avon will defend in Class MM at 1:30, and Glastonbury in Class LL in the final race of the day.

A surging Spartan, a group of powerful Panthers and some rapid Red Raiders made Saturday their day at the CIAC Cross Country Championships at Wickham Park in Manchester.
Berkshire League champion Sean Parker, of Shepaug, ran away from the field to claim the Class S state title and lead his team to a second-place overall finish.
Meanwhile, Pomperaug overpowered the Class L girls field to earn the Class L championship that eluded it a year ago.
Derby topped the Class S girls field, winning the school’s first-ever title after finishing second the past two years.
Parker defeated his closest competitor, defending champion Chris Casallo of Bolton, by 42 seconds over the 3.1-mile course in 16:15. His time improved by more than a minute from 2015, when he was seventh in 17:22.
Only three runners, all in the Class LL race, led by Ahmad Zakeer (15:49) of Class LL champion Staples, posted better times than Parker during the day.
Shepaug pressured eventual champion Lyman Memorial before bowing, 71-78.
Pomperaug blitzed the field, placing five runners in the top 20 to outdistance second-place Wilton, 62-103. Madison Villa led the way for the Panthers with a fifth-place finish and was followed by Nina Koobatian (sixth), Molly Flanagan (15th), Kathleen Schenk (17th) and Emma Cavanagh (19th).
Cheshire, led by Lauren Daddi’s third-place finish, was third in Class L.
Derby had too much pack power for second-place Housatonic, winning 55-99, with freshman Sabrina Hanock (second), Kiley Rodriguez (fourth) and Nicole Rizzo (12th) leading the way. Rodriguez and Rizzo had both been on the Red Raider squads that lost out in 2014 and 2015.
“I am extremely proud of this team,” said Derby coach Nick DiLuggo. “Nicole was the MVP for the day, racing with a severe sinus infection and placing 14th overall. Nicole had been our No. 1 runner for most of the early season, but has been battling through this sinus issue. She symbolizes what this team is all about; she knew she was sick, but cared more about the team’s win than her personal performance.”
The Mountaineers received outstanding efforts from Berkshire League champion Mari Cullerton, who finished fifth, followed by sister Eve Cullerton (seventh) and Emily Sullivan (10th). This was the highest state finish ever for the Mountaineers, who were fifth in 2015.
The Pomperaug boys also had a big day, placing second in the Class L boys race, which was won by New Milford, 73-54. Scott Gaffney and Robert Moore finished ninth and 10th, respectively. The Panthers finished third a year ago.
In the Class SS race, the Nonnewaug boys posted a fourth-place finish, led by D.J. Geissenger-Tut, who finished fourth overall.
In the Class M girls race, the BL champion Nonnewaug girls, sparked by Helene Berger’s 10th-place finish, also came in fourth.
