MANCHESTER — The Nonnewaug girls cross country team may be a young group, but it has lofty goals.
After a fourth-place finish in last year’s state meet, the Chiefs set their sights on a state championship this season.
Nonnewaug got what it wanted Saturday at Wickham Park, winning the Class M title ahead of Berlin by a score of 94-129.
“They won their state title,” Chiefs head coach Arleigh Duff said. “They’ve been trying to get it, and they got it.”
Sophomore Helene Berger led the way with a fifth-place finish in a time of 20:19. Freshman Jennie Schwarz and sophomore Carly Andrew also made it into the top 20.
Schwarz was 16th while Andrew took 17th.
Junior Jacquelin Berger was 26th followed by sophomore Maddie Woodward in 34th.
“They had a great day,” Duff said. “They all ran real well.”
Helene Berger earned All-State honors, which goes to the top eight finishers in each class. All of Nonnewaug’s runners, which included freshman Kylie Fitzgerald and junior Brooke Andrew, get to run in the State Open.
“They just had a great year,” Duff said. “They went undefeated (in dual meets), and they won three of the invitationals they were in.”
